27 April is Freedom Day in South Africa.
Today, 18 years ago, millions of South Africans went to voting stations to elect a new government for the country.
For most people this was the first time that they were able to vote in the country of their birth.
4 Years before that Nelson Mandela was released from prison after spending 27 years behind bars.
It was the begginning of a democratic South Africa.
On Freedom Day a new, democratic nation was born whereby all people are equal regardless of race, gender, religion, sexuality, etc.
However, South Africa has not become a totally equal nation within many inequalities prevailing. However, a democratically elected government means that there is a better chance for all South Africans to have better lives than they had before.
