A Warrior's Life: A Biography of Paulo Coelho
By Fernando Morais
HarperCollins Publishers 2008
With Coelho's approval Morais has presented an objective look into the professional, personal and spiritual growth of the first 60 years of the acclaimed author's life.
Using Coelho's own collection of diaries from his adolescence to interviews with many people from his life, past and present, Morais details shocking, moving and puzzling periods of the author's life. Periods and experiences that have directly and consciously influenced Coelho's many books, from 'The Alchemist' to 'Brida'.
It is a gripping read, especially considering the dramatic tales of Coelho's Satanic worship, military detentions, assisted attempted suicides, chart-topping music, spiritual travels and professional ambitions. Coelho's life indeed mirrors somethings you might find in his books.
Because Morais wrote the biography with Coelho's approval and assistance, it is surprising how candid and open the protagonist has been with the unattractive aspects of his past and personality. But, Coelho remains a lovable character, and his fans would probably love him more after reading about his tragedies and triumphs.
