At the last MTN South African Music Awards, held in Johannesburg, singer LeAnne walked away with two awards after being nominated for the first time! This is not LeAnne’s first album, but her latest offering; “The Journey” has put her on the industry map. Here LeAnne tells us about herself, her music and her thoughts on the South African music industry.
For our international readers, tell us who LeAnne is and describe your sound for us.
LeAnne is a singer/songwriter, entertainer & artist. I would describe my sound as pure r&b/soul. I grew up listening to a lot of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child & Faith Evans & I think these influences often come through in my music.
Congratulations on your two SAMA awards for ‘Best R&B/Neo Soul Album’ and ‘Best Produced Album’! In your acceptance speech you mentioned how hard you have had to work to reach this point. Tell us a bit about your musical journey.
What people don’t know is that I’m not new to the industry. I started off singing as a backing vocalist for Loyiso & Danny K. I recorded my debut album, ‘Simply Luvlee’ in 2005, which I won a Metro Fm Award for Best R&B. I continued singing in Dubai & LA where I moved to briefly before starting work on my sophomore album, The Journey.
How have you overcome obstacles to your success, if any?
I continue to surround myself with the same people I’ve known since before the “fame” & that has helped me stay grounded & overcome any obstacles. I don’t conform to what’s hot right now. I don’t follow musical trends & I stick to what I love.
This must be just the beginning of great things for you. What is your ultimate goal for your career?
My dream is for people in Africa to know my music, to know my name. Whether you’re in South Africa or Egypt, I want them to sing my songs.
The producers of your award-winning album ‘The Journey’ are highly acclaimed in the South African music industry. What was your experience like working with them?
I have known Sipho Dlamini, Mike Manitshana & Alexis Faku since I was 17yrs old so working with them was the only way to go for me. They are the best at what they do in South Africa, we share the same passion for music and I always learn and grow so much when I work with them, and I will continue to stick to that dream team. If it ain’t broke….!!!!! J
Since the South African Music Award’s there have been conversations about the South African music industry and how some South African artists feel that they are not supported by their markets. What are your thoughts on this?
I fully agree! 90% of what’s played on our radios’ is international! If we got just half of that it would make such a difference. Especially local R&B, there are so many R&B artists that some of you will never even hear of because they choose to play Trey Songs over us!
Which artist would be your dream collaboration?
BEYONCE!!!!! Without a doubt… Talented, hardworking & inspirational.
What is the best life advice you have ever received?
To never second guess or doubt myself. I was chosen to use my gift, so I believe in myself. I was born to do this.
Who are your favourite designers?
David Tlale, Fundudzi & Kluk CGDT are my favourite local designers. Internationally, Marchesa & Ellie Saab, pure glamour!
What would be your dream gig?
To open for Beyonce, lol.
Where can people catch up with you and see you perform next?
